Artocarpus_integer
Artocarpus integer or whole artocarpus is a tree species of the family Moraceae. Its fruit is edible and bears in Indonesia the name of cempedak.
It is native to tropical Asia: Thailand, Brunei, Indonesia and Malaysia and Singapore.
The taste of its fruit resembles jackfruit and breadfruit with a hint of Durian. Its edible flesh is around the seeds and is very sweet.
Description:
Cempedak trees are large, evergreen trees. They can reach a height of 20 m, although most reach only a dozen meters. The trees are monoecious, with male and female flowers growing on the same tree. There are many varieties, although few are named. The vigorous tree can withstand heavy fruit crops once or twice a year.
Fruit
The syncarp can be cylindrical to spherical and is 10 to 15 cm long and 20 to 35 cm long. Thin, leathery skin is greenish, yellowish to brownish in color, and shaped with pentagons that are high protuberances or flat facets of the eye.
The fleshy and edible arils surround the large seeds in a thick layer. These arils are edible by boiling or roasting. The arils are yellowish-white to orange, sweet and fragrant, smooth, slippery and viscous on the tongue and somewhat fibrous. The taste of the fruit is similar to that of jackfruit and breadfruit associated with a hint of durian. The seeds are flattened or elongated spheres, about 2-3 cm long.
Uses:
The fruit is consumed in its region of origin, can be eaten fresh or cooked. The donuts made by dipping the arils in the dough and frying them in oil are sold in the streets of Malaysia. The seeds can be fried, boiled or roasted, then peeled and eaten with salt. The taste is similar to water chestnuts. Young fruits, like the young jackfruit fruit, can be used as a vegetable. In Borneo, the skin of the cempedak can be turned into a food called mandai by peeling the fruit until it looks white, then dipping it in brine to preserve and soften the texture. Mandai is usually eaten after frying.
The wood is of good quality, strong and durable, and used as a building material for furniture or boats. Fibrous bark can be used to make ropes. Yellow dye can also be produced from wood.
