Duchesnea_Indica
Duchesnea indica, the Strawberry of the Indies, Duchesne Strawberry or Strawberry with yellow flowers, is a species of stoloniferous perennial herbaceous plants of the Rosaceae family.
This species is invasive1 in suitable environments, even competing with wild strawberry.
properties
This small plant is very similar to wild strawberry (Fragaria vesca) with which it is often confused. Here the flowers are yellow whereas they are white in the edible strawberry, the fruit (fleshy floral receptacle) is more spherical. The confusion is not serious because these false strawberries, although not consumable, are not toxic.
Medicinal uses in Asia
In China, the plant, known mainly as "snake strawberry" 6, is used as a medicinal plant, the whole plant being usable (leaf, fruit, root, fresh or dry). It is known to have anti-cancer properties (in combination with other species, antiseptics, anticoagulants, depuratives and febrifuges). While dried leaves are an oily preparation used to treat burns and eczema, poultices of fresh leaves are known to be effective against snake bites, insect bites, abscesses and boils. The fruit is sometimes used in alcoholic beverages.
The plant is also found on Reunion Island, where it is widespread. It is called brown strawberry, strawberry toad or strawberry water.
