The jamblon is growing fast. It can reach 30 m high and can live more than 100 years.
The trees begin to bloom from March to April. The flowers of Jamun are scented and small, about 5 mm in diameter.
The fruits grow in May or June and look like large berries. The fruit is oblong, ovoid, green at first, it turns pink, and finally black and bright purple during its maturation.
A variant of the tree produces white fruits. The fruit, sometimes called Java plum, has a combination of tastes: sweet, slightly acidic and astringent. It tends to blacken the tongue.
Uses:
Its dense foliage gives shade and is cultivated only for its ornamental value.
Its solid wood is rot-proof. This is why it is used in railway sleepers and installed in wells.
It is sometimes used to make cheap furniture and homes in the village, but it is relatively difficult to work.
The seed of the fruit is used in various alternative medicines like Ayurvedic medicines (to control diabetes, for example), unani and Chinese for digestive disorders.
The leaves and bark are used to control blood pressure and treat gingivitis.
We make wine and vinegar with fruits. It is rich in vitamin A and vitamin C.
